The moment external stimulation stops - screens off, lights out, nothing to do - the ADHD brain often accelerates rather than winds down. Evening often brings a burst of energy and focus - a second wind that arrives just when sleep should. This makes night-time the most productive or engaging part of the day, creating a powerful pull to stay awake. Screens, projects, and conversations all feel better at 11pm than they did at 3pm.
Executive function difficulties include trouble shifting between states - not just between tasks, but between wakefulness and sleep. The transition to sleep requires disengaging from the current state, which is the same process ADHD makes difficult all day long.
